Mike Hedley Principal Cornet
Mike started to play the cornet in 1971 at the age of 14 with a local Manchester band, In 1974 Mike joined the Cheetham Hill Band, a second section band conducted by Derick Garside and played as assistant principle cornet.
In 1975 Mike had his first break and joined the Hammonds Sauce Works Band. After several months he then moved to Besses O’th Barn band on second cornet under the baton of Elgar Howarth.
In 1977 Roy Newsome became the musical director of Besses and put Mike as assistant principle cornet under the supervision of Brian Mather the principle cornet.
In 1979 Mike joined the Armed Forces and played for the Royal Corps of Transport Band. He attended two years at Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall and had the fantastic opportunity of being tutored by Professor John Wilbraham. With John Mike had the opportunities to play with the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and various orchestras. At the school of music Mike won Best Improved Musician in 1983.
In 1984 Mike decided to stop playing and embarked on a completely different career.
In 2010 after a 26 year break from music Mike started to play again and is now at Hunmanby Silver Band.
